New Community Legal Interpreter Program Launches in D.C.

November 11, 2008 marks the official launch of a new 3-day training in community legal interpreting held in Columbia, Maryland called “THE LANGUAGE OF JUSTICE: Interpreting for
Legal Services.” The curriculum was developed by interpreting and legal experts across the U.S. under the oversight of Ayuda, a legal services agency in Washington, D.C.

Shortage of Court Interpreters Worsening in U.S.

Experts say the shortage of certified court interpreters, particularly those who speak languages other than Spanish, is worsening. This shortage of certified interpreters has forced some judges to repeatedly reschedule cases. Several court systems have been pushed to use freelance interpreters who lack appropriate training, resulting in some cases being reversed because of poor interpreting.
