SB853 Requires Interpreters in Healthcare

Meanwhile, the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) in Sacramento is pushing for a certification program to ensure that interpreters used by health plans are well-versed in medical lingo and the languages they translate.

Hearings Held in Sacramento

A hearing of the Assembly Judiciary Committee entitled “Court Interpreters: Meeting Essential Needs for Equal Access” was held on November 13 in Sacramento, convened by Judiciary Chair Dave Jones to explore the underlying reasons for the shortage of interpreters in the California courts.

This report evaluates the state of interpreter services, the statewide shortage of certified and registered interpreters, marketplace and compensation issues and the impacts on court operations and court users when interpreters are not available.
