Region 2 Update

Notice of Membership Meeting June 10, 2017

Region 2 Ratification Vote or Strike Mode

SAN FRANCISCO (MAY 31, 2017) _ CFI's Region 2 bargaining committee returns to the table tomorrow (Thursday, June 1) for what promises to be a make or break session.
We are very close to a tentative agreement and the Region’s committee has gone back to consult with its principals on a key issue. The outcome hinges on whether the Region agrees to treat all interpreters fairly in terms of the financial benefits webargain. The Region’s position previously would disadvantage many members and is not a workable deal. 
If that issue is resolved this Thursday, we expect to hold a meeting on June 10 to discuss the terms of a tentative agreement and carry out a ratification vote.  
If we don't reach a tentative agreement, we will need to meet to discuss preparations for further strike actions region wide.
Either way, please save the date _  Saturday, June 10 _ for what will be an important meeting.

Temporary Administration Hearing

Final Update 

Santa Fe Springs (April 25, 2017)
The hearing re-convened this morning at 9am, and concluded at 3:20pm.  
Hearing officer CWA District 7 Vice President Brenda Roberts has announced that her ruling will issue 30 days after receipt of the transcript.  The court reporter hired by CWA has said that she will have the transcript submitted in 2 weeks.  That should be roughly about June 8th.

Marian Needham Executive Vice President of TNG presented the case in support of Temporary Administration and Local 39000 Steward Juan Ramirez presented the case in opposition.

Temporary Administration Hearing

Monday 4/24 Update 

Please be advised that the CWA hearing regarding the Temporary Administration began this morning at 10:05 after the opponents of the Temporary Administration asked to start with a preparatory caucus.
The hearing is expected to continue into Tuesday April 25th.  The case will continue until concluded, but at the outset Hearing Officer, CWA Vice President District 7 Brenda Roberts, said she expects the hearing to conclude on Tuesday.

Members in good standing are entitled to attend as observers, and today more than 7 did.  Membership status is being confirmed upon arrival at the hearing which is being held at the CWA District 9 offices:

Please be reminded that CWA's rules do not provide for the Local to pay for lost time from work or expenses for any member to attend or participate in the hearing.

Upcoming Hearing


April 21, 2017

The hearing into the issues of the Temporary Administration will take place next week.  The hearing will commence at the Santa Fe Springs office on Monday April 24th at 9am and will continue each day until concluded.

The hearing was ordered by the Communications Workers of America, and postponed from earlier this spring when efforts were made to negotiate a settlement with the former officers.  The hearing officer is CWA District 7 Vice President Brenda Roberts. 
Members of the Local who wish to attend are welcome , but please be aware that you will be observing, there is no provision for comments from observers in this process.  Since the hearing will conclude when all evidence has been presented, and arguments made, we cannot predict the schedule.
Please feel free to check with the Southern California office, and our office staff can let you know if the case is likely to continue into the next day.
Finally, the rules of the national union mandate that the Local cannot pay for the expenses or salary loss for any member of the Local to participate in the hearing.

R3 Bargaining Bulletin #10

Interpreters Say No to Region 3 Offer 

SACRAMENTO (April 7, 2017) _ Interpreters in Region 3 have resoundingly rejected the Last Best and Final Offer (LBFO) presented at the March 15 bargaining session.

Ninety-six percent of those voting rejected the proposed three-year contract, with 67.5 % of members turning out to vote. Ninety-five percent of the Region’s 88 employees are union members and eligible to vote.
Voting took place at three in-person meetings held after work this week in Kern, Merced and Sacramento counties. Members heard from the bargaining committee and discussed the Region’s offer, weighing the growing pay disparities and proposed concessions in employment rights against the wage offer.

Participation was high and sentiments against proposals to strip away employee rights prevailed, along with a broad consensus that more progress on wages is needed to address fairness and equity issues.

Many thanks to all who were able to come out and vote on these important issues. Your bargaining team will press forward to reach a contract agreement that protects employment security and makes greater progress toward recognizing our value within the court system.
