Interpreter Budget
CFI applauds increase to $101.5 million in state’s interpreter budget
SACRAMENTO (June 28, 2016) _ Gov. Jerry Brown signed a state budget Monday that boosts the allocation for interpreter services to $101.5 million.
The $7 million increase from last year’s budget aims to expand access to interpreters for litigants in civil cases in all California courts.

Judicial Council approves VRI pilot despite CFI’s concerns
SAN FRANCISCO (June 28, 2016) _ The Judicial Council approved a Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) pilot project in California courts despite cautionary comments from CFI.
“We do not support the VRI pilot as currently proposed,” stated CFI President Ariel Torrone in comments submitted ahead of Friday’s Judicial Council meeting. “The parameters and design are not sufficiently defined and the proposal fails to address critical factors that should be taken into account for the pilot process to be useful and effective.”

CFI set to meet with Los Angeles Court in July
LOS ANGELES (June 23, 2016) _ Member meetings held in three court locations in May were well attended. Meetings with Los Angeles Superior Court administration on the impacts of civil expansion have been stalled. CFI made a series of proposals on April 8 to address impacts of staffing shortages on professional standards and interpreter working conditions. The court has yet to respond to our proposals and took nearly two months to give us a next date to meet. Our next meeting is set for July 12.
